Principles behind a model portfolio
A model portfolio shows how a set of stocks could be combined and managed according to clear rules. It is a way to study position sizing, diversification and risk — not a personal recommendation.
Diversification. Holding companies from different sectors and regions means one bad earnings report or one industry shock does less damage to the whole.
Position sizing. How much you put in each idea matters as much as which ideas you pick. Many managers cap any single holding at a small share of the total so no one stock can sink the portfolio.
Risk and drawdowns. Every portfolio has losing periods. Knowing in advance how large a fall you can live with helps you stick to a plan instead of selling at the worst moment.
Rebalancing. Over time winners grow and losers shrink. Reviewing the mix on a regular schedule — often quarterly — brings it back in line with the original plan.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a recommendation to buy?
No. It is a model shown for education and research. Always do your own research and consider your own circumstances.
What is a drawdown?
The fall from a portfolio's highest point to its lowest point before it recovers. It shows how painful a bad patch can be.
Why spread across sectors?
Different sectors react differently to rates, oil and the economy. Mixing them reduces the chance of one event hitting everything at once.
Do past results predict future returns?
No. Historical performance shows how a model behaved in the past; markets change and future results can be very different.
