The repricing happens in the first seconds after 8:30am ET: a core CPI surprise of 0.1 percentage point against consensus routinely moves two-year Treasury yields by ten basis points or more and reprices Fed funds futures for the next two meetings. Watch the core month-over-month print first — it is the series the Fed's 2% target framework is most sensitive to — then the shelter and supercore (core services ex-housing) components for direction on persistence.

CPI release time in UK, Europe and Asia

The CPI report is published at 8:30am New York time. For readers outside the US, that converts as follows:

London (UK): 1:30pm for most of the year (12:30pm during the clock-change gaps).
Frankfurt / Paris: 2:30pm (1:30pm during the same gaps).
Tokyo: 9:30pm in the US summer, 10:30pm in the US winter.
Sydney: late evening to just after midnight local time, depending on the season.

US and European clocks change on different dates for a few weeks each March and late October/early November; during those gaps the London and Frankfurt times are one hour earlier.

Release-day routine

Before the release, note the consensus for headline and core CPI, both month-on-month and year-on-year.
Check the previous month's print and whether shelter or energy drove it.
At 8:30am ET, read core month-on-month first — it is the figure rate expectations react to most.
