What to look for in earnings reports and central bank statements
Earnings releases and central bank statements are among the most market-moving documents published. They are also long and full of careful wording. These tools pull out the parts that analysts read first, so you can get to the point quickly and then dig deeper where it matters.
Earnings per share and revenue. The headline numbers are compared with analyst consensus. A company can grow profits and still see its shares fall if the result misses what the market expected — which is why you can enter the expected EPS and revenue figures for comparison.
GAAP versus adjusted figures. US companies report results under GAAP accounting, but many also publish "adjusted" or non-GAAP numbers that exclude certain costs. A widening gap between the two is worth questioning.
Guidance. What management says about the next quarter or year often matters more than the quarter just reported. Raised guidance tends to be rewarded; cuts can outweigh an otherwise strong result.
Central bank language. Policy statements change slowly, so small edits carry weight. A shift in how inflation, jobs or future rate moves are described can signal a change in direction before rates actually move.
Frequently asked questions
Which documents work best?
Official PDFs such as a company's quarterly earnings press release or a central bank's policy statement. Text-based PDFs give much better results than scanned images.
What is the difference between a 10-Q and a 10-K?
Both are filings US public companies submit to the SEC. A 10-Q covers a single quarter and is unaudited; a 10-K is the full annual report with audited accounts and more detail on risks and the business.
What does a 'beat' or 'miss' mean?
A beat means the reported figure came in above the analyst consensus estimate; a miss means it came in below. The size of the surprise, and what guidance says next, usually drives the share price reaction.
What do hawkish and dovish mean?
Hawkish language leans towards higher interest rates to fight inflation. Dovish language leans towards lower rates to support growth and jobs. Markets watch for any shift between the two.
