How to trade Bank of Canada days

Unlike the Fed or ECB, the BoC runs a lean release cycle: the statement at 9:45am ET is the event, and on non-MPR days there is no press conference to walk back or extend the move — so the first USD/CAD reaction is fast and tends to be the cleanest. The second leg comes from the Monetary Policy Report on MPR days, where revisions to the CPI and output-gap forecasts often move the loonie more than the rate call itself, and again two weeks later when the summary of deliberations reveals how contested the decision was. Canada's rate path is unusually exposed to two things outside the Bank's control: US trade policy, which feeds straight into export-facing growth, and oil — West Texas Intermediate strength is historically a tailwind for CAD. On announcement days, also watch the Friday-before Business Outlook Survey: a soft price-intentions reading has repeatedly front-run dovish statements.

The Bank of Canada's 2026 policy backdrop

The BoC ran one of the deepest easing cycles in the G7 through 2024–25, cutting from the 5.00% peak faster and further than the Fed — a gap that defined USD/CAD for two years. Into late 2026 the debate has shifted from how much lower to how long: with the easing largely delivered, Governing Council communication now leans on the level of the policy rate relative to neutral, the output gap, and the pass-through of US tariffs into Canadian consumer prices. That makes the four MPR rounds the real markers of the year — the rate decision tells you what the Bank did, the MPR tells you what it thinks happens next.
