How to follow earnings season

Every quarter, listed companies report their sales and profits. The earnings calendar shows who is reporting and when, so you can prepare for moves in individual stocks and the wider market.

Timing. Reports come either before the US market opens or after it closes. After-close reports often cause big moves in extended trading and at the next day's open.

Estimates. Results are judged against analyst forecasts for earnings per share and revenue. A beat or miss on both carries more weight than a beat on one.

Guidance often matters most. What management expects for the next quarter or year can outweigh the results themselves.

Volatility after the report. Options prices usually rise before earnings and drop sharply after the announcement, once the uncertainty has passed. The largest companies can also move the whole index.

Frequently asked questions

What is EPS?

Earnings per share — profit divided by the number of shares. It is compared with the analyst consensus estimate.

Why do shares fall after beating estimates?

Expectations may have been higher than the published consensus, or the company's outlook for the next quarter disappointed.

When is earnings season?

Most large US companies report in the few weeks after each quarter ends — mid-January, April, July and October.
