Four meetings (January, April, July and October) also release the quarterly Outlook for Economic Activity and Prices, and those are usually the biggest days for the yen and JGBs.

How to trade BoJ days

The BoJ is the one major central bank without a fixed release time — the statement can cross anywhere from late morning to early afternoon in Tokyo, which keeps USD/JPY and JGB futures on edge for hours. The first move comes on the policy rate and any change to JGB purchase guidance; the second leg runs through the Governor's 15:30 JST press conference, where wording on wage growth and the yen matters more than the prepared statement. On Outlook Report meetings, revisions to the core CPI forecast often move markets more than the decision itself. Because the BoJ announces while Europe sleeps and New York is winding down, liquidity is thin — yen moves can overshoot before London opens.

The BoJ's 2026 policy backdrop

Having ended negative rates and yield-curve control, the Bank of Japan is in a gradual normalisation cycle, moving in the opposite direction to the Fed, ECB and Bank of England. The pace of further hikes depends on sustained wage growth from the spring shunto negotiations and whether core inflation holds near the 2% target. That divergence — tightening in Tokyo against easing elsewhere — is the dominant theme for the yen and for global carry trades funded in JPY through 2026.
