Nobody would like to be the Binance CEO CZ Changpeng Zhao today after just being robbed for $6.3 billion. He has gone from being hit with a prison sentence to getting robbed for $6 billion dollars in what is thought to be the biggest theft ever in history.
In DeFi, decentralized finance, basically crypto blockchains, there are two ways of holding assets: on an exchange or in your own wallet where you have direct custody of your digital assets on the blockchain. They both have their pros and cons, like we can see from this situation where the exchange has been hacked.
This is not the first time a crypto exchange has been hacked and users of the platform have lost their cryptocurrencies. Bybit was a famous hack, but one of this scale and magnitude has never been seen, and not just that, but on the world's No. 1 crypto trading exchange.
Historic Scale of the Record Breach
The $6.36 billion Binance breach is widely considered the largest single theft of any kind in recorded history. Blockchains and forensic consultancies like Elliptic point out that it far exceeds both traditional pre-crypto era robberies and previous digital heists:
Dwarfing Physical Heists: Prior to large-scale crypto exploits, the largest known single theft was Saddam Hussein’s pre-invasion removal of roughly $1 billion from the Central Bank of Iraq in 2003. The Binance attack is more than six times larger.
Setting a Crypto Record: It is more than four times larger than the previous record-holder—the $1.5 billion hack of Bybit in February 2025.
Post-Freeze Figure Still Sets the Record: Even accounting for the swift, coordinated freezing of ~$2.7 billion in stablecoins and network assets by issuers like Tether, Circle, and Arbitrum, the ~$3.6 billion+ that remained in the attacker's control still stands as the largest unrecovered cash/asset heist on record.
CZ's Binance is the No. 1 crypto trading exchange in the world for a reason, with low to nearly 0 spreads, slippage, and fees, and instant execution. Binance and CZ Changpeng Zhao's reputation is now on the line after what has happened for the platform to rectify the losses.

With such a hack this size on the world's number 1 platform like never before, it would make people wonder: has AI, artificial intelligence, been adopted to pull off such a hack? In that case, and if it is North Korean-related, then they could be utilizing AI models from China, or maybe they have developed their own LLMs large language models, and smuggled NVIDIA hardware into North Korea to power the AI models? It might sound crazy, but it could be not far from reality, and if so, it's also a scary thought for politicians a lot off nations who are not so friendly with north Korea, i am sure the thought would keep the Samsung CEO in south Korea up at night .
North Korea Attributed to Attack
BINANCE SUFFERS RECORD $6.36 BILLION SECURITY BREACH
The Largest Crypto Heist in History: Over $6.3 billion in digital assets were drained from Binance hot wallets across 10 different blockchains, with the bulk of the transfers occurring within a rapid 20-minute window.
North Korean Attribution: Major blockchain intelligence firms—including Chainalysis, TRM Labs, and Elliptic—have attributed the attack with high confidence to TraderTraitor, an elite state-sponsored cybercrime unit affiliated with North Korea.
Aggressive Asset Freezes: A coordinated industry response by issuers and networks (including Tether, Circle, Ripple, and Arbitrum) successfully froze roughly $2.7 billion to $3 billion of the stolen funds before they could be laundered.
Binance Response and Crypto Market Impact
Exchange Response & Operations: Binance temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals to conduct security checks and revoke affected authorization keys. Exchange leadership confirmed that user losses will be fully covered.
Bitcoin BTC has suffered for this and is down, currently trading at $76,000 dollars a coin. Ethereum has also suffered and went nearly as low as $2,000 a coin.
